Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development
At Esh Winning Primary School, we encourage all children to develop their Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) awareness through each curriculum area. SMSC is deeply embedded throughout the whole of the PSHE and RSHE curriculum and the themes that are taught throughout the year. Every lesson from Early Years to UKS2 offers opportunities for children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, and this is clearly mapped and balanced across each year group. Our curriculum enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life.
The Cultural Child – PSHE/RSHE supports the cultural development of a child by exposing them to a wide range of experiences, situations and exploring them from other people’s points of view.
The Social Child – PSHE/RSHE supports social development by providing children with the opportunity to discuss their views knowing they are in a safe environment as well as encouraging them to listen and allowing others to have their own opinions.
The Moral Child – PSHE/RSHE supports moral development by encouraging children to look, discuss and evaluate a range of social and moral issues based on different case studies and scenarios in which children discuss what is right and wrong and connecting this to British Values and Rule of Law.
The Spiritual Child – PSHE/RSHE supports spiritual development by engaging children with a range of mindfulness activities. Children explore feelings and values found in a wide range of scenarios and situations through role play, story telling and discussions.
British Values
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
We promote and reinforce these British Values throughout the curriculum and all areas of school life. Topics and units of work are used to focus on these values in Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Theme days and assemblies put these values at the heart of our school. Visitors into school and class trips enhance teaching, learning and understanding in all of these areas. Within PSHE & RSHE, British Values are the integral thread which runs throughout all of the teaching, not only that, the lives of the children, their families and community play a key role in ensuring we are guiding and supporting our children in being the children of tomorrow, resilient, open minded and responsible members of the community.
