Curriculum – Art & Design

Our high-quality art curriculum enables children to express themselves creatively through exploration. It will introduce children to a wide range of artists to develop their knowledge of styles and vocabulary. 

We will encourage and foster: 

 Providing children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design

• Access to a wide range of inspirational artists who contribute to our culture, including local art and art from around the world. 
• An awareness of how art and design reflects and shapes our history.
• Challenging children to think critically and develop a rigorous understanding art and design.

At Esh Winning Primary School children will be become creative learners, who are reflective and can evaluate their  own artwork.  Creativity and uniqueness will be celebrated and children will widen their knowledge of a variety of artists. As teachers, there will be an emphasis placed on individuality and children will be given the freedom to explore art using their imaginations. Children will build upon their knowledge of art and design skills in each year group to allow them to produce inventive pieces of art.   

Within Early Years Curriculum children are taught to represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music and dance. They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. 

 In Key Stages 1 & 2 children are taught through three units per year.  Each unit of learning starts with researching an artist, exploring ideas and then recording experiences using their imagination.  Children practise various techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space using high quality resources in their sketchbooks. Using these skills, children create their own works of art before critically evaluating these. 

Each unit builds upon previous learning so that children become proficient in drawing, painting, collage, printing, textiles and sculpture skills. Children will access each of these mediums throughout Key Stage 1 and 2. 

 The curriculum lead attends Art Network meetings to stay abreast of regional and national good practice. This information is shared through staff meetings and supporting documents.  

We have links to the local secondary school and staff have had CPD opportunities from specialist art teachers.

Art Long Term Plan

Cultural Capital in Art & Design

At Esh Winning Primary School the art and design curriculum is intended to build upon children’s current experiences and cultures.  This can vary hugely for each child and in recognition of this we endeavour to provide an art and design curriculum that provides all children with experiences to help build their dreams and aspirations.  In order the enhance children’s cultural capital the art and design curriculum aims to include:

• Visits to galleries and local landmarks
• Opportunities for observational art study
• Meeting local artists
• Visiting and taking part in workshops to enhance knowledge and understanding of skills
• Having access to a wide range of art materials and tools to explore their own creativity

SMSC

Children use their imagination and creativity exploring how to express their feelings through their own creations.  They will research known artist and learn to appreciate the work of others developing a sense of awe and wonder.  During their exploration of artists, children will discover how artists will represent moral issues through their work.

In art and design children will collaborate to produce work through groupwork recognising the need to take on others’ perspectives.  Children will also have opportunities to celebrate their own achievements by ‘showcasing’ through galleries to exhibit to parents, carers and the school community.

Art and design allows children to develop an understanding of different ways of life and a respect for other cultures.  Through the study of a varied and wide range of artists, children will learn how those artists use elements of their culture to inspire their work.

Democracy

In art and design we ensure that we are aware of and consider the views and values of others, particularly when working collaboratively. We may take votes and hold discussions when making decisions about our work, and collaborative projects.

The Rule of Law

We understand the school rules and guidelines and recognise their importance in keeping ourselves and our peers safe. During projects and activities, we access our tools and materials making sure we are following class rules. We have an understanding of why rules are in place and the consequences of not following them

Individual Liberty

In art and design, we are given the opportunity to express our individuality through our projects. We are given regular opportunities to make our own decisions and choices in our projects. Whilst making our own choices, we understand and respect boundaries.

Mutual Respect & Tolerance

During art and design lessons we behave to positively impact the work and productivity of others. We are constructive and respectful of others’ feelings and viewpoints when giving feedback. We work collaboratively on projects, having respect for our peers’ views and being receptive to the advice of others. We also use art and design as a creative way to experience a variety of festivals and traditions. We understand people’s different views and opinions make them who they are and we are accepting to those views and opinions.  We explore beauty through art and continue to do this within the faiths and beliefs of others.
