Our Class Charter
English
Year 4 develop their love of reading through being immersed in stories, investigating facts and absorbing vocabulary from a range of high-quality books. We read a variety of books from our Reading Spine throughout the school year (including classic books, contemporary fiction and picture books). We also have access to a wide selection of books in our reading bookshelves.
Our Reading Spine books are:
- Bill’s New Frock by Anne Fine
- Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White
- Why the Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo
- The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Phillip Pullman
- Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne
- The Snow Walker’s Son by Catherine Fisher
- Perry Angel’s Suitcase by Glenda Millard
These are some of the books that we will focus on in our English lessons. Children will have the opportunity to explore different ways of writing using these books to stimulate their thought process.
Mathematics
We follow the White Rose Maths long-term plan, encouraging children to develop their learning using the concrete – pictorial – abstract approach (CPA approach). Children also practise their times tables in numerous ways such as using Times Tables Rockstars and Times Tables Olympics each week. This will support the children’s learning in preparation for the Year 4 Multiplication Check which will take place in June 2023. In addition to this, children also complete our Mathstastic on a weekly basis.
Ukulele
In our Year 4, children learn to play the Ukulele with Mr Elliott from Durham Music Service.
