Early Years at Esh Winning Primary School
Our Curriculum
At Esh Winning Nursery we believe that your child is unique and deserves the very best start to their educational journey. Learning in Nursery begins with a play based curriculum centred around the Statutory Framework for Early Years Foundation Stage. Play is essential to children’s learning, health and wellbeing and is a fundamental part of our daily routine at Esh Winning Nursery.
Indoor and outdoor play opportunities are utilised to develop and encourage children’s learning in all seven areas of development. Although we provide ‘themes’ to our learning, often based around a traditional tale or favourite story, learning is more often child led and we aim to provide a range of activities where the children’s interests lie. This could include dinosaurs, princesses or superheroes to name just a few.
Provision in Nursery allows children to develop in all seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Areas such as water and sand, home corner, small world and reading areas present opportunities for children to develop fundamental social skills whilst building relationships with new friends and staff in a positive learning environment.
Physical skills are developed indoors and outdoors using a range of gross motor equipment and outdoor writing and reading areas allow children to continue their exploratory learning wherever they choose.
The adults in Nursery support and encourage the children’s learning opportunities wherever possible and are constantly observing and questioning during the children’s play.

Intent
At Esh Winning Primary School we believe that all children deserve an education rich in wonder and memorable experiences that allows children’s natural creativity and curiosity to flourish, alongside the purposeful acquisition of skills and knowledge. We believe that an education that does all of this gives children the best chance to become well-rounded, happy individuals, ready to succeed in an ever-changing world.
We have 5 clear aims in EYFS as we want our children to be:
Ready to learn: Children have a positive, confident attitude to learning. They are both physically and emotionally ready to learn.
Resourceful: Children show initiative, ask well thought out questions and are prepared to use a variety of strategies to learn.
Reflective: Children are curious, able and willing to learn from their mistakes and can describe their progress
Resilient: Children are prepared to persevere and stay involved in their learning, even when the process is challenging.
Reciprocal: Children are prepared to help each other.
Implementation
At Esh Winning Primary School, we offer a curriculum which is broad and balanced and which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all children, whatever their starting points.
We follow the Early Years curriculum using topic themes and enrichment opportunities.
The aim of our curriculum is to develop a ‘thirst and love for learning’ and ‘Awe and Wonder’ memories.
We recognise the changing needs and interests of our pupils and we are responsive to this, regularly developing existing topics.
In Nursery we continue to learn predominantly through play, allowing lots of time in the school day for the children to be in continuous provision. This allows children to build upon their own experiences, developing their own child-initiated activities and those important social skills which will serve them well throughout their school lives and beyond.
Impact
From their own starting points, children will make good progress academically and socially, developing a sense of themselves so that they are well prepared for the transition into Reception.
Children will be confident to take risks and discuss their successes and failures with adults drawing on their experiences to improve or adjust what they are doing.
We will also aim to help children to make sense of the world around them, to develop tolerance, compassion and an understanding of their rights and the rights of others in an ever evolving world.
Children will have develop essential knowledge and skills required for everyday life and lifelong learning. Children at Esh Winning Primary School will be well rounded, happy, inquisitive and successful learners.
