General information
We have PE on a Thursday and a Friday in Autumn term 2. We will change reading books and reading for pleasure books , please ensure that your child’s reading books are in their bags and returned to school everyday. Reading organisers are provided for every child and we ask that parents listen to their child read as least 3 times a week. If you give them the opportunity to read more often, this will only benefit their learning.
What does our school day look like?
Currently, our first lesson of the day is phonics where we split into smaller groups to learn new sounds and practise our reading. We follow the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme which you can read more about on our Reading and Phonics page on the school website. We then have Dough Disco followed by our English and Maths lessons with break and snack in between. Mrs Richardson cooks our lunches for us and we enjoy playing outside after we have eaten. After lunch, we have a short whole class reading/phonics session. Our afternoon lessons might be science, art, DT, computing, religious education, music, P.E., geography, history or PSHCE. We have a short play time and story time in the afternoons too. We are really lucky to have our own playground and playing field outside the classroom.
What kinds of things do we do in Year 1?
In science we look at the changing seasons and explore how the school environment changes over the year. In English, we enjoy reading books such as Beegu, Can’t you sleep Little bear, Goldilocks and Just the One Bear, Pumpkin soup, The Elephant and the Bad Baby and Tiger who Came to Tea. We study the books and then do lots of writing activities. In maths, we complete lots of practical activities using White Rose Scheme and written work and explore areas of maths such as number, shape and space and fractions.
After the October half term holiday we are going to be looking at the books Funny Bones, The Elephant and the Bad Baby and The Jolly Christmas Postman.
After the Easter holidays we are going to be looking at Cops and Robbers and Where the Wild Things Are.
After the summer half term we are going to be looking at The Tiger who came to Tea and Dogger.
